For the Bookworms, here's the gist!
Website Platforms are always being debated because the one you choose can make or break your website - literally. A lot of the times, you may ask for advice on which platforms to use, but the suggestions are often biased and based on personal preferences.
Some people love WordPress and others hate it because they don't think it's easy to work with; others like Squarespace because they love the simple templates; some like Wix because of how easy it is to customize; and others are die-hard Shopify fans.
Everyone has a platform they love and this post is to cut the confusion for you with some unbiased advice!
When I first started with WordPress, I HATED it! Even though I could use it, it took me so much time to get my vision on paper, that I dreaded using it.
Now that I've got more experience on the platform and a few tricks to make it easier for me, I like using it a lot more. Still, many people hate using it because they feel like they don't have as much control over their site.
So who should be using WordPress?
WordPress is for entrepreneurs who are expecting massive growth. If you know that your business is going to expand, you'll want a platform that can handle all of that growth.
If you have several revenue streams like e-commerce, services, a membership site, courses and digital products, and a blog or podcast, WordPress would be the best platform for you - especially if you're expecting a lot of traffic to your site.
If you have big dreams for your business and expect to become a Household name like Marie Forleo, or Jenna Kutcher, you'll want to go with the strongest platform on the InterWebs, which is hands-down WordPress.
If you're also looking for a more custom option, then WordPress should be your go-to whether you're gonna DIY or hire a pro. You'll get a custom site that's all you and that would be hard for anyone else to copy.
What about Wix and Squarespace?
I personally love Wix and my website is currently hosted on Wix. It's a great platform when you want to get your website up and running quickly and easily. I'm on it because when I originally started, I needed my website up in like a couple of days and I was able to do that through Wix.
If you need a website up YESTERDAY and don't have the time to hire a designer/developer, Wix is your platform and totally DIY-Friendly.
Squarespace has the same features, but it differs because you're more limited with the customization. They do have templates that'll get you up and running and they're super simple-looking.
If you're okay with having a website that looks similar to lots of other websites out there - at least for now, Squarespace can work for you too! Wix's templates are a lot more dynamic and their drag-and-drop editor makes it easier to make it your own.
I personally hate using Shopify. My least favorite platforms are Shopify and Squarespace because I'm a Web Designer who likes to customize things and I feel like WordPress and Wix make it easier for me.
But, if you're looking to sell mostly physical products and have a lot of inventory to keep track of, you'll want something that helps you keep track of all of that.
Shopify mixes two needs together: you've got lots of products to sell and you want to get something up really quickly.
However, if you ever want to start a blog, or offer services and bookings on your site, Shopify isn't the best platform. If you sell products and also want to blog about them, the other platforms above are your best bet!
It's literally perfect for you only if you're just trying to set up shop.
So these are a couple of things to look out for when you're choosing the platform for your business's website. Your goals will make it a lot easier for you to choose a platform that you can stick with.
